In my own writings I get so involved in the story that I forget to show the situation and clog my story with a ton of tells. It is not very fun to read and it tends to disconnect the viewer with the scene and the characters.

I have noticed it these past few weeks while I was away for a much needed stress relieving break. I read a lot of erotica romances and have found that in a few of the novellas, it is overwhelmingly obvious that the author has the same issue I have.

Lets be honest for just a second and review a passage from a book that I will not name. The scene is a sex scene so forgive me while I post the text and then rewrite it the way I would like to read it.

He grabbed my hair and pulled it. Jerking my head back as well as my body towards his lap. He shoved himself inside of me so quickly that I came instantly.

This is boring. "Really?" was my first reaction to this horrible scene. I was neither stimulated nor involved. Here is the same scene with how I wished it had been written.

He wrapped his hand around my long brown hair and forced my body to become flush with his. The moment his skin touched mine I could feel his throbbing need. Pushing down onto his pulsing flesh gave me an instant sense of fullness. I felt my core reach volcanic levels. My sex began to squeeze him as he thrust inside of me. I knew that each second he was inside was going to make my sensitive flesh boil over flooding him with my lava bringing him closer to filling me with his seed.

I know this is not perfect but I was attempting to make it sound less robotic and more lyrical. Not everyone is going to agree with me and I have been told that I tend to flower a scene a bit to much. I like it that way. I love using descriptive words to set the scene because I know what makes me hot and bothered and I hope that it makes others feel the same way.

When writing often times we forget that the reader cannot see the picture of the scene in our minds. We have to spell it out to them. Missing a section of scene setting can push the reader off the bus we want them on to finish the story on. We want them to feel each speed bump, smell each pheromone and taste the heat that we put into each scene. If they can't see what we see then they are driving through our manuscript blind.

I would love to say that all the books I have read in the past several weeks were awesome and didn't have these flow issues but that would be lying. The erotica genre wasn't the only genre I read during this break. I read several others and it was there too. No author is exempt from having this issue, that I have ever talked to, especially in their first draft. However the issue should be resolved after several drafts, beta readers and editing sessions. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Some authors actually write their books with the intent of leaving out all of those "useless" descriptors.

Let me show you another example of what happens when we forget to use our words to describe a scene, even one that has literally no importance in some readers opinions.

Kelsey walked to the kitchen. She opened the cabinet door and took out a glass. She poured orange juice into the glass that she got from the refrigerator. She stood next to the sink as she downed the juice and then rinsed her glass. As she did all this she thought about her situation and how she was going to handle the changes that will be happening soon.

Some will say there is nothing wrong with that paragraph and others will scream that it is an information dump that we just didn't need to know. I think that if she is going to be thinking about something while she is doing all that , then not only do we need to know some details of what she is thinking, but also the details in the scene around her. While it will not mean anything for someone to know what color the wall is in the kitchen, describing the scene may give the audience the feeling that they are standing in the kitchen with her.

I am not a professional writer, nor am I perfect with my own writing as you can probably tell by just reading this, but I had an opinion and I wanted to share it. I hope you don't mind.

So, tell me what things have you run across in your reading/writing that bothers you?

I am excited today to have Doris on the blog with a spot of advice, to show you just what all the fuss is about and just who Doris is. Don't be afraid, she doesn't bite and it has been proven beyond scientific fact she has no teeth, but her wit is sharp and she does tend to rip into you if you stray away from being true to yourself.

With Valentine's Day behind us and the lonely hearts club back to drinking wine from a box or perhaps, hitting the clubs again, there are still a lot of gals trying to figure out a way to keep their dignity intact and still find a man who excites them and will make them happy throughout their lives...or at least have a serious and stable relationship with! Maybe even those whose glitterific relationship has lost some of it's shine needs a bit of a boost!

Are you game? We also will be having a live interview with the Cabin Goddess, Kriss (she is also one of the head Fairies here), and a central Facebook event page where you can post questions for Doris throughout the tour, get updates and links during the tour and ask more info on the novella! Everyone in the know has been itching to see this book get everywhere and in have people join them in reading it and laughing just as hard as they did! You won't even need cream afterwards.. perhaps a glass of wine and a new boyfriend, but not any cream!

My Review:
Whew let me tell you this was a great book. It was fun and light hearted and touched a serious subject along the way! We should pay more attention to what our Vagina's are talking about. Are you listening to your vagina? Did you know it could talk? I had no clue and I will fully admit that after I finished this I totally went and apologized to mine for the neglect that I had been putting it through. I found the book completely amusing and it is now one of my favorite books and I will be adding it to my wish list should this ever come out on audio. I want more and more of this. I fully recommend this to everyone, especially those of with vagina's or that are attached to those with vagina's, wish they were vagina's, wish they had vagina's or just act like vagina's lol. Okay I know that pretty much covers everyone, but you get the idea. The story is about a vagina that wishes her person would listen to her and she takes us on an adventure in her life and it is definitely a ride on the wild side. A bit of hot and sexy, with some fun and flirty, and even some bitch and moan thrown in there too!

Twenty-two-year-old Jemma can’t seem to get her life in order. Her track record with men stinks, she constantly worries about getting fat and ending up a spinster at thirty. And to top it off, she has to be a bridesmaid at her most-hated cousin’s wedding. She feels like her life is over, until Doris decides to help out. Who’s Doris? Doris is Jemma’s vagina and she thinks more of Jemma than her own brain does. Doris is on a mission to save Jemma from herself, but is the task too much for one vagina to handle?

Happy Monday everyone!

My house is full of sick people and apparently so is my brain!
Today there is no rhyme or reason to the list it is what it is.

Crap forgot to write the speill again!

Okay so here is what this blog post is all about! I look up titles in the erotica sextion of Amazon and then pick five that make either make me laugh or whatever I have thought has made me laugh. Then I share them with you. It is all done in fun. You will find no links or authors names, just the titles, although some of the authors names are equally as hilarious as some of the titles.

Hope this brings a smile to your face, I know it did to mine!

Hello everyone!

As you can see if you are a regular reader of my blog that I am on a mission to finish my own book so that I can have one published instead of just reading everyone elses! But I wanted to keep this going so that I can have a bit of fun in between editing rounds!

Lets go over how this works!

Ready?

Are you sure?

I hope so, because I wasn't when I read some of these titles and let me just say wow!

So basically what happens is that I go through the erotica genre on Amazon.com and sift through literally thousands of titles trying to find ones that either throw my brain in the gutter or make me laugh. Then once I get back in my wheel chair I post them along with my first reaction with you so that your Monday morning has a bit of a laugh as well!

I do not do this as an insult to the authors and never include a link. This is all in fun and meant only to make a few of us with dirty minds to have a bit of a giggle. Now if others look up the books and buy them, then yay! for the authors and if they don't then no harm no foul! I just want to have a good laugh on dreary Monday mornings to start the week off with a bit of humor!

Todays list has no search word attached but if you would like to put in your two cents send me an email at leanneherrera@gmail.com or a comment below and I will use your word to search out next weeks list of titles!

WTF! She's Doing Who?( I chose this one because I loved the title, it follows my theme!)

Fluffing My Neighbor (This just made me laugh because I have older family members who call breaking wind or farting for a female, fluffing. So all I thought when I read this title was one of my great aunts farting on the neighbor!)

Carnival Girl Fuck ( 1. I want to know where this carnival was when I was younger? 2. Is this every guys fantasy? and 3. the title just made me laugh because all I thought of was clowns going at it lol!)

Sporting Wood ( This is what I would call happens when guys have to go pee and have morning wood and let me just say I laugh my ass off when it happened to guys I dated, so this brought back giggles from my past)

Todays theme is all about sex and potty titles that I found humorous.

I forgot to tell the what and why of WTF! Monday Editions.

Okay so here goes:

Basically the "what" are titles of books that I find funny or makes my gutter mind produce something silly in response.

The "Why?" is pretty easy to understand if you are an avid reader or reviewer. Basically after having to scroll through the many titles on Amazon looking for books I want to review I found more often than not, laughing at titles. I told my friend about it and she told me I should share the laughter. I decided that she was right and what better day to share this humor than the worst day of the week! Mondays! A day I know I detest.

Now to the obligatory warning: I only do this for a laugh! No authors are harmed in the process as I do not include links or authors names. It is not intended for harm only for the giggles that it can produce.

If you would like to participate in then email me or comment below with a word or words that I can search for on Amazon and see what kind of crazy stuff that pops up!

Fresh from her parents' divorce, eighteen-year-old Nora Saynt-Rae is ready for a new beginning at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. Life is at last beginning to look up. Then Nora meets a guy. Stunningly gorgeous, completely eccentric and tirelessly vengeful, Gabriel has a secret.

He is a wizard!

A new grad from Magasant School of Magic, Gabriel is a Releaser - a vampire slayer. Should she ignore her doubts and the doubts of everyone around her?

My review:
I was so disappointed when I read this book. Right from the beginning I rolled my eyes and thought NOOOOOOOOO!!! The story itself is not awful, the premise is good and the story is catching but the characters were horrendous. First we have the Harry Potter rip off of a male character. He comes on the scene in a robe, carrying an owl in a bird cage and a wand, immags etc.... Sound Familiar? Then we have the wolf boy who is from the woods who is named Wolf and has brothers whom are above him. Rolls eyes. The wolf and the wizard are in love with the girl who is hiding a secret. So it is a love triangle similar to Twilight, great. (insert sarcasm) I knew within the first conversation about the newborn that the newborn was the girls secret only she didn't know it yet. I mean contacts to dull her eyes and the overabundance of perfume wasn't a giveaway for the girl, really? Especially since both the wizard and the wolf talk about the vampires being bright eyed and smelly. Hello?? Wake up call for the girl. I was literally yelling at my kindle to tell the characters the obvious. At least it was obvious to me. Now do not get me wrong, the author is good and can really write and I am not sure if she was trying to appeal to the younger audiences or if it is meant to be fan fiction but the lack of imagination and the overly obvious clues drove me crazy. I won't be getting the next book nor will I be recommending this to the younger set, as the sex scene is really inappropriate. I won't recommend this to adults because they will know what is happening right from the beginning as well. I just cannot understand why someone with obvious writing talent would waste it or cheat themselves by borrowing from other authors to mash up a mess like this. So what happens when Twilight meets Harry Potter? It fails tremendously and no amount of magic can fix it.

About the author:

I have no idea who the author is because they do not have an author profile set up and I refuse to search for one. I wrote the review as if it was a female writer not because I think they are but simply because putting he/she or they for everything really got on my nerves. I apologize if this is a male author.
I hope no one minds!

This is a subject that has been weighing on my brain all day today and I find the best way to get through this is to just let it go.

I was playing with paint lol! So for those ( like me) that cannot read that little font here is a larger version of the same thing.

The Box by Leanne Herrera

I get so angry when people decide who I am by what category I fit into.
Am I gay, straight, bisexual?
White, Black, Other?
Republican, Democrat, Liberal?
Pro-choice, Pro-life, indifferent?
Then I realized I am just as guilty of assuming
as the ones that anger me.

I put people in that box that I am trying to climb out of.
I put things in there too.
I judge people if they are different than me
I don't mean to

It is like the old saying, "don't judge a book by it's cover."
I don't
Well not completely
but even if I read the synopsis, reviews, and excerpts
that cover will taint my viewpoint

I think people judge each other the same way.
It is how we decide if we want to give them a chance
How unfair is that?
I certainly don't like being put into a box
or tainted in someone's eyes
simply for a part of me that is probably less than 10% of who I am

But how do you stop?
I have no idea and it makes me sad.
I wish I could start over in life
and not have all these preconceived notions
dumped inside my box

but I would still be in a box
wouldn't I?
Even if it is one
that I built myself.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07865181241296400832noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-937467684122632522.post-11282395594025616332014-02-12T00:04:00.000-05:002014-02-12T00:04:48.296-05:00Wild Things by Chloe Neill (review)

My review:
This is the 9th book in this series and they are always good. I have not been let down yet. The characters both old and new are wonderful and well developed. At this point in the series you really feel like you know them as much as you know your best friend. The new characters are just fricken awesome. I am a total fan girl when it comes to this series and was super excited to participate in a live question and answer session and about wet myself when she answered my question. I know that has absolutely nothing to do with the review but the session enveloped some questions I had prior to this book coming out and some of those questions were answered in this book. I am so excited about this book and cannot wait until the next one comes out. This is one series that I would recommend ( and my friends will tell you) to everyone! It has a little of this and little of that but most importantly it makes things believable. Something that I want from a paranormal book. There is so much more I want to say but as always I cannot post spoilers so you have to go get this book and if you haven't read the others, read them first I promise it is totally worth it!

I know that it says it is a stand alone book but I would so love to know more about Sarah and what happens next in her life. I want to know who she chooses and several other things that I cannot mention because it would be horrible spoilers which I don't do. I found it a bit creepy and a little cheeky and a whole lot interesting. If you love a little mayhem mixed with a lot of interesting characters then this would be something you would enjoy too. I paid for this book and I would pay for more of the same again and again because the book was really good. I fell into the scenery and the plot line kept me jumping along with the characters. It is a perfectly yummy book and it would be just as good even without the cupcakes.

So it is another Monday and guess what that means?

It means it is time for another WTF! Episode!
It also means I get to tell all about what this is. It is the yucky part of this blog and I won't deny that there are times when I want to say blah, blah, blah but that won't accomplish anything so here is how this works.

On Sunday nights I go on a search to find funny titles or titles I find funny then I put them here for others to find on Monday morning and have a good giggle or at least something to smile about. Now before anyone puts their panties on crooked I do not do this to harm an author. I do it simply because it is funny. I don't include their names or links to their books because I want it only to be a humorous moment not an attack on the author.

My search is usually from a keyword that either someone emails me or a comment someone made or even something as mundane as something that linked to me. Today the word is late because I got so involved in editing my own book that I was late getting this together and put out... whooops!

In the rubble-strewn wasteland of Alphabet City, a squalid tenement conceals a treasure "beyond all imagining"-- an immaculately preserved, fifth century codex. The sole repository of ancient Hermetic lore, it contains the alchemical rituals for transforming thought into substance, transmuting matter at will...and attaining eternal life.

When Rose, a sex and pain addicted East Village tattoo artist has a torrid encounter with Martin, a battle-hardened loner, they discover they are unwitting pawns on opposing sides of a battle that has shaped the course of human history. At the center of the conflict is Paul, the villainous overlord of an underground feudal society, who guards the book's occult secrets in preparation for the fulfillment of an apocalyptic prophecy.

The action is relentless as Rose and Martin fight to escape Paul's clutches and Martin's destiny as the chosen recipient of Paul's sinister legacy. Science and magic, mythology and technology converge in a monumental battle where the stakes couldn't be higher: control of the ultimate power in the universe--the Maelstrom.

The Book of Paul is the first of seven volumes in a sweeping mythological narrative tracing the mystical connections between Hermes Trismegistus in ancient Egypt, Sophia, the female counterpart of Christ, and the Celtic druids of Clan Kelly.

My Review:
I felt like this was something completely different than what I expected from this type of paranormal erotica, even more different than the synopsis can even tell you and I was right. I knew from the first page that this story was going to take a little left of what the normal shifter story would have taken me. The characters were milder in their behavior but deeper than a typical erotica novel. I loved this because it allowed me to know the characters and dig deeper into the storyline. The story was complex but easy to follow, but because it was not altogether typical formula, I didn't know what was going to happen next. So the surprise and climb to the ending climax was wonderful and allowed me to truly enjoy the story as it unfolded. I will be recommending it to those that enjoy a little erotica with their paranormal romance!

The Perfect Man…For Her?

Who is the perfect man? Ad executive Melissa Brock might not know the answer, but she does know it’s not Sam Curtis. But with time running out and no flawless male specimen in sight, Mel has no choice but to try and pass off the former soldier as the real thing for her next campaign. Her business partner claims Mel only needs to “smooth out Sam’s rough edges,” a comment that has her reaching for a sand blaster. Confident, irrepressible, and sexy as hell, Sam has an unerring talent for finding trouble and more appeal than any man has a right to possess. Against her better judgment, she finds herself falling under his spell. But Mel has to wonder: is she falling for her own Mr. Right, or under the hype of her own campaign?

The concept of the book and even the synopsis enticed me in. I refuse to say it was all about the abs because I have always judged a book by the reviews and synopsis. By judge I mean decided if I wanted to read it or not. I generally have pretty good instincts on what I think will be a great read. This was a so-so read. I loved the idea behind the story and the characters seem pretty solid, but there were times when I wanted to shove Sam and tell him to step up the pace and smack Melissa for being such a freaking ninny. I hated that it dragged on for so long. I wanted them to show some sort of, I don't know, some sort of emotion and communication between the two but the book honestly seemed to be more about the campaign they were on than the budding romance. To me the book should be about the romance if it is a romance novel. Now don't get me wrong this wasn't a bad book, I just wanted it to go faster. When they finally did jump into each others arms I sighed in relief and by then I was at the end of the book. I did however love the story and would still recommend it to others but maybe more to the ones that like less romance than others.

I would have loved to have more author information here, like a picture and maybe a bio but it appears this author does not have a author page on Amazon. I checked good reads as well but the book is not even listed there at all and the author is just not easy to find. Maybe I will find her on another form of social media and can update this blog post with something more than, "hey I tried but have no information about the author, sorry."

My Review:
This was interesting, and not what I was expecting. I am not going to lie though I would love to go on vacation and pretty much trip over a night in shining armor that will carry me away like she did. Oh and did I mention he is rich. He is and knows how to use his money to spoil someone. He is a bit stiff and domineering but he makes up for it with his ability to worship the ground she walks on. I loved her best friends too. I want to put them in my pocket and take them home. There were some iffy moments in the book where sometimes things struck me wrong or just felt unnecessary but it didn't deter me from the book, it actually made me fall into the story more. I wanted it to be real, even though logically I knew it wasn't. I would love to read more by this author and will recommend this book to all my die hard romantics!

Synopsis:

A one-night stand with a werewolf has unexpected consequences in Theresa

Meyers's latest romance in the Sons of Midnight series.

After he is exiled from his pack, Tyee Grayson must learn to make it on his own.

But one night with a beautiful stranger who has luminous blue eyes changes

everything…. Especially when his instincts shout that she is the one.

All elementary school teacher Jessica Brierly wanted was a night on the wild side,

but when she finds herself pregnant, all the rules change. Not only does her lover

have more secrets than she ever imagined, but suddenly they're both fighting off

vampires.

When vampires attack the town she dearly loves, Ty must work with his old pack

to save them from a ruthless enemy who could kill not only his mate and his

unborn child—but the entire human race.

My review:

I fell in love with this book and had no idea it was a fourth book of a series. The story itself stands alone quite well. The characters are wonderful and the plot is full of love and action. Some of the action required me to fan myself but it did not stop me from reading it. The imagery the author used was really authentic, having lived in the Seattle area a few years back some of the things she described I could picture myself. I loved the brothers but not unlike Theresa it would have gotten old fast, but I would have moved out a long time ago. I will be recommending this to those that have a love for werewolves, Goddesses, and vampires!

Excerpt:
The air was clean and cold outside. Ty’s head cleared, his senses grew
sharper. The cool evening breeze, heavy with the salty scent of nearby Puget
Sound, ruffled Jess’s hair, sticking honey-colored wisps to her full, rosy lips.
“You okay?” he asked as he gently tucked the strands back behind her ear.
Jess blinked, and stared up at him, a mixture of curiosity and disbelief in her
eyes. “What just happened in there?”
He tried to give her a lopsided grin, but it turned into a wince when he found
his jaw was tender from the hits the vampire had landed. He rubbed the soreness.
The night air chilled the dribble of blood from the cut on his cheek, making it wet
and cold, but there was no scent of vampire. The third one must have been smart
enough to ditch his buddies. His body ached from the fight, but it would heal fast
enough. “A bar fight with strangers.”
“You didn’t know those guys?” she asked, looking around her nervously.
“They seemed pretty intent on messing with you.” She grazed the corner of his
mouth with her fingertips. “You’re hurt.”
The light touch was enough to send a powerful surge of awareness pounding
through him that wiped away any of the ache that remained. Damn. There was no
doubt in his mind there was a strong Mesmer forming with this woman.
He gently moved her fingers away from his mouth, keeping them folded in
his. Her hands were fine boned and slender and feminine. “No big deal.”
Her full lips tipped up into a soft smile, making him crave to kiss her.
“Tough guy, huh?” She pulled a car remote from her pocket and pushed it, making
the lights flash on a silver pickup on the edge of the dirt-and-gravel parking area
beside the bar.
“Sounds like you’ve been around a few.”
She opened the driver’s door to the pickup and turned, standing in the gap,
staring at him, her head tilted. “A few. But they’re nothing like you.”
Ty closed the gap between them, putting one hand on the door frame,
shielding her from view of the parking lot but maintaining space between them. He
knew better than to get close enough to be swamped by temptation. The Mesmer
might be working on him, but that didn’t mean she’d understand if he came on too
strong. Especially not after the fight.
“If you want to head home, I understand. I’ll stay here awhile and make sure
those guys don’t follow you home.”
She reached out and grabbed fistfuls of his T-shirt near his collarbones,
pulling him close until he was chest to chest with her. The soft swells of her breasts
pressed against him and the minty scent of her hair, and hint of lilac on her skin
teased his sensitive sense of smell. Everything within him went silent and still,
fixated on the lush curve of her mouth so damn close to his he could feel the
warmth of her breath.
“What I want is for you to come home with me.” Jess stood on her tiptoes
and looked up into his face, the dark fringe of lashes around her eyes making the
blue luminous. Her rapid pulse beat against his chest, taking over the rhythm until
his matched the pace she set. For a second the world tilted sideways.
Ty’s gaze dropped to the silky, damp edge of her lips and he was lost. He
dipped down and kissed her. Her lips were soft and willing, tasting of peppermint.
She tasted so damn sweet, hot and spicy all at once. A warm, viscous heat flowed
through his veins, coating and drowning out every other sensation until he was hot
and hard at the same time.
Ty gripped the edge of the truck’s door frame, nearly denting the sheet
metal with his fingertips. But he was determined to keep his hands to himself, even
though they itched to touch her. Heat seeped through his shirt, the temperature
difference amplified by the chill in the air. The kiss turned deeper, slicker, the
tip of her tongue brushing against his. The spicy fragrance of female that spiked
the air left no doubt she was aroused. When they broke apart, both of them were
breathing hard, their breath creating misty white clouds.
“You sure about this?” He could control his body, but not the rough edge of
his voice as he struggled to maintain composure. “I could follow you.”
Jess looked up at him, her dark lashes dropping a fraction, giving her a sultry
look. “Hop in.”
He was smart enough not to argue with her, but that didn’t mean that the
little voice of human reason in the back of his head wasn’t screaming loudly that
this was stupid and rash. He should take his own vehicle so he didn’t get stuck who
knew where. He didn’t know a damn thing about her. Couldn’t read her mind and
certainly hadn’t asked enough questions. But this was a Mesmer, the wild Were
instinct side of him shouted back. No one, Were especially, could blame him for
responding so quickly and profoundly to her. And hell, he could always follow his
nose and walk back if he needed to.
“Anything you say,” he answered. He waited until she climbed up into
the cab, admiring the way the dark denim jeans hugged the curve of her ass,

I get emailed a word or it gets put in the comments and I search Amazon for books with that word or that come up from the search. Then if it makes me smile or something I think when I see it makes me laugh I put it aside and pick the best 5 and share them with you. I look forward to this every Monday because it starts my day off with a good giggle. Something I am sure a lot of us need after a weekend of fun or relaxation or whatever it is that we do before the horrible Monday starts. I do not include links or authors names. I do not do it to harm the author, it is ONLY done for a good laugh.

Synopsis:

Ava Paskell is not your normal young woman. She's twice as strong as girls her age and she has a problem controlling her emotions. When her dad insists they spend the summer together in a small, strange Canadian town, she knows her life is about to change. But one of the biggest life changing moments is meeting Cyrus Carlston. The powerful bond they share from the very beginning scares her as much as it thrills her. As her life is put in danger and she gets closer an closer to the truth, one thing is clear, Ava's dreams are about to become her reality.

The idea behind this story was huge and I wanted it to be wonderful, and for the most part it met my need for a good story. I wanted it to be so much more though and so while this is a great book and I liked it, it did not bowl me over. Ava was an awesome character and her father was pretty great too. I actually loved the all the characters, the story just felt rushed. I know that when I write I have this issue as well. I get so excited about the idea I have for what happens next that I zoom right through it. This leaves a bunch of holes for the reader unfortunately and this is the case for me. I would still rate this highly and will still recommend it to others because it is a great story with wonderful leading characters and I think others will enjoy reading it as much as I did. I just wish it was a little more fleshed in the action scenes, like the author fleshed out the regular scenes.

Vivienne Callahan has known only hardship. As if growing up with an alcoholic, drug addicted mother wasn't traumatic enough, she's escaped from her physically and verbally abusive boyfriend only to struggle every day to make ends meet as a waitress in a Minneapolis diner.

Along comes Mikah Blake, a handsome stranger who quickly takes an unexpected and persistent interest in her. On the surface, "Mr. Suit" seems to be Vivienne's opposite: rich, well-fed, successful. As Vivienne will learn, Mikah is more than he seems, and for reasons unknown, he's determined to be her knight in shining armor. But after having finally found her own two feet after years of abuse, it's difficult for her to accept Mikah's help.

Will her body's unexpected response to Mikah's touch be reason enough to overcome her pride and traumatic past and learn to love and trust? Or will her past, refusing to be left behind, come back to claim her?
What I mean is, I have been reading so many paranormal books that I expected this one to have some huge paranormal things. Not because it said it was paranormal but because I could not get my brain out of paranormal mode. I loved this book and found myself wanting to help Vivienne and encourage Mikah to help more. The characters were very realistic and the situation while heartbreaking is one that I have seen man times ( unfortunately) in my lifetime. I wanted to kick her boss in the balls too but that is a totally different animal at this point. The plot was smooth and I was able to slide from one place to another easily. I found myself wanting to jump through the pages and tell Vivienne to chill out but that is what made this book so enjoyable for me. The fact that I wanted to jump into the story just means it was very realistic. I hated being a bystander but I didn't relate to either of the main characters for very obvious reasons. I absolutely recommend this for others!

Cassandra Sinclair is a dutiful niece helping an elderly aunt through a medical crisis by managing her aunt’s oddities emporium, The Curiosity Shop. For years the rumors that her aunt was a witch haunted Cassandra, but they were rumors she never allowed herself to believe. That was until Mitch Westfield, a local beat cop, enters the picture along with thugs demanding protection money.

THE CURIOSITY SHOP is a comedy of errors that’s a family-oriented mystical story reminiscent of Bell, Book and Candle. Digging into the belief, people have powers beyond our comprehension, where good overcomes evil.

My review:
I really enjoyed this book. I wanted it to be longer because I enjoyed it. I wanted to live in the neighborhood and visit the shops. The author was able to set the scene enough that I felt like I could walk there one day. The characters were great. I especially got a genuine laugh out at the expense of the bad guys. I know, I know, you are not supposed to laugh at them but I just couldn't help myself. The plot flowed very well for me, I just wish I had been there for the first time they had issues and could have seen some of the things that were talked about in this book. Now that is not a critique on this book, more of a selfish want on my part. When I come across a story I really enjoy I tend to become greedy. I will be recommending this book to those that like a good witch against the bad guys story!

I live and grew up in Central Wisconsin. I'm starting a new phase in my life. After being a displaced worker I've decided to take my hobby of writing to a new level and be self-employed. I'm tired of depending on others. In 2003 I was one of the writers featured in an American Movie Classics special titled Malkovich's Mail. Of the five writers and stories reviewed mine was the only one that had positive reviews, it was titled Blue Moon Rising. I did just the reverse, where I adapted my screenplay into manuscript form because it was a story that had strong characters and elements. I have a wealth of stories to tell and am looking forward to sharing them with all my readers. After spending a few years writing screenplays I've discovered my first love is writing novels. I will be downloading my seventh one soon. I do appreciate comments on how you enjoyed my stories.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07865181241296400832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-937467684122632522.post-53443140061905844742014-01-27T23:56:00.000-05:002014-01-27T23:56:05.873-05:00I refuse to review another "book" that is not really even a book!

I was very angry before I sat down to write this blog but I am a whole lot calmer for the moment. I sat down with my browser open to Amazon and set out to look for some books that were on special ( since I am beyond poor) to review on my blog. I like to do and did it even when I did have money in my Amazon account because I knew that a lot of those that are featured for free or reduced price are by Indie authors and I support them, always.

So anyway I digress. I found the books I wanted to read and wrote down the ones that I would do each day this week and then I started reading. OMG! I read todays and I refuse, I mean absolutely refuse to write a review on this "book". Rarely do I ever post a grievance without the name of the book but today is one of those days. I was so angry when I finished , I wanted to throw something. I screamed a lot of explicatives and my poor husband thought I had fallen out of my wheel chair or harmed myself and came running. I was loud.

When I choose a book to read, I read the synopsis and then read the reviews that have come before me, and I read ALL the reviews. This book only had a hand full of them and they were all good, but the book had not been out long and sometimes these things take time. It sounded good so I took it. I knew by the file size that it was not going to be really long and that it was part of a series. I believed it would probably be a novella or a short story but nope it wasn't.

The author had several "chapters" that fooled me into thinking it was a real story. Real stories have plots, climaxes, problems, interactions etc... This had none of that. NONE! It was basically an introduction to a series. It was less than what someone would put into a chapter. It was more of an idea than an actual story. When I write ideas like this I run them by my friends, I don't publish them.

Now don't get me wrong what was written was nice. I got to know the characters and it hinted that there might be some conflict later on and then... IT JUST STOPPED. Well actually it said " to be continued". I was fuming.

If I had known that this was not an actual story but more of an introduction to the story I would have waited until she had a couple of "episodes" out before I decided to read it and feature it here. I know I am probably being petty but I can't really review someone's characters. I need something more than that. I need some meat or heck even a balanced vegan meal but to let me smell the food wrapper and then walk off is cruel and I can't do anything with that. It is not going to satiate my hunger or give me enough nutrients to survive.

Sorry, but this is one of my pet peeves. I have taken on novels, novellas and heck even shorts and chapters but there was a beginning, middle and end to those pieces not a beginning and (poof) more later. Really? Really, really?? It just made me grrrr.

So tell me what is your biggest irritation when getting a book to read or review? What is the one thing that you have seen authors do that just make you cringe and not want to read it? If you could give an author that has great potential a critical piece of advice that would keep them from crossing that line for you what would you tell them?

Again I apologize this was not a review today, I promise there will be one up tomorrow!

Hugs and remember to smile at someone today, it could be the only smile they get!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07865181241296400832noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-937467684122632522.post-88582247359611926512014-01-27T13:47:00.001-05:002014-01-27T13:47:43.062-05:0021st WTF! edition!

I created this blog feature with the help of a wonderful friend because I had stumbled across some really strange titles. I though that by sharing them I could share the laugh I had. Sometimes the laugh is totally my fault because I misread the title or because I visit the gutter. Besides that this blog is never meant to harm an author but to brighten the dreary Monday with a bit of my silly thoughts.

When I first searched this I thought okay we would have typical shut up titles but I was amazed to see over 300 pages of titles with shut up in them... So it took forever to find the perfect 5 to share with my thoughts.

My heavy velvet cloak fell in oppressive, suffocating folds in the closed space of the ceremony chamber, the cowl trapping the annoying bits of puff I missed. Trying to please her coven, starting over in a new town, and fending off a bully cheerleader who hates her are just the beginning of her troubles. What to do when delicious football hero Brad Peters--boyfriend of her cheer nemesis--shows interest? If only the darkly yummy witch, Quaid Moromond, didn't make it so difficult for her to focus on fitting in with the normal kids. Add to that her crazy grandmother's constant escapes driving her family to the brink and Syd's between a rock and a coven site. My review:
When I first saw this book I was intrigued by the title. The cover through me for a loop but I often look past the cover because it is what is in the inside of the book that matters. I read the reviews and the synopsis and thought "why not!" I was really happy that I took a chance on it. It is a great book and I look forward to purchasing the other books in the series and reading them. It is not often that a paranormal witchy book that nabs my heart but this one did. The characters developed nicely through out this first book that made me know them in a more in depth way than most other books of this length. The plot flowed and we got to experience some of the indecision and anxiety that face a lot of regular teens today. I loved this book and fully recommend the series to others that are interested in a bit of witch with their romance!

Patti Larsen is an award-winning middle grade and young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn't it? I'm a storyteller who hears teenager's voices so loud I have to write them down. I love sports even though they don't love me. I've dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon.

But always, always, writing books calls me home.

I've had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It's the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands... thank you for reading.

As for the rest of it, I'm short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can't seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my very patient husband and four massive cats.

I think I made a few of the same mistakes Jess did early on in life. The author made me believe that she had taken a page out of real life and sent us through the story. It was exactly what I expected it to be and that is a great thing. As with any book nothing is perfect but this story was perfect for me and I know many others who love the shifter genre as much as I do that would love this story as well. The plot was easy to understand and even the villain was exactly what I expected him to be. The author found a formula that works and delivered a really great paranormal romance that I will be recommending to my friends and buying the others in the series to read as well!

Synopsis:

What happens when an over-the-top, flat-out, chronically rushed career woman hires the world’s slowest carpenter to complete her late father’s half-built B&B before she loses it to the mob?

Type-A workaholic Beth Turner sure has her hands full: An eighty-hours-a-week real estate career ... "The Yesteryear," an unfinished inn left to her by her dad ... a loan-shark waiting to snatch away the extremely valuable property if Beth misses the almost impossible completion deadline ... and now: Sean Campbell.

Brilliant. Charming. A carpenter of legendary renown, Sean Campbell has no trouble convincing Beth that he's the man for the job ... except for the irritating fact that he is quite possibly the slowest-moving human on the face of the earth. Now add in some sultry summer heat, lust, and romance to mess things up and slow things down. Top it all off with a string of sabotage, courtesy of the murderous loan-shark, for which Beth blames Sean, and there goes the romance. And, barring miracles, there goes The Yesteryear.

But Sean is full of miraculous surprises, including his desperate transformation into a warp-speed building machine. But can even miracles overcome the loan-shark's final piece of sabotage ... one designed to put Beth out of his misery permanently?

My review:
I won't lie, I picked this book up while it was free on Amazon. What I will tell you is that while the premise of the book sounded really promising, it didn't deliver as much as I wanted it. The characters were charming and about half of the story was believable. Most people that read my reviews or listen to me talk about the books I read, know that I don't use check lists or get in depth about a story but for this one I think it is just as important to talk about the good as well as the bad. First good thing, the leading characters were awesome, I could totally see the work-aholic and the laid back personality getting together. The first bad thing, she never actually speaks with the person that holds the loan, who is our bad guy right from the beginning. That is a huge thing for me. The second good thing, I loved her use of descriptive words, it helped me as a reader to dive into the scene. The second bad thing, I would never believe that a traveling carpenter would have elite people calling him to build for them especially since he seems to be relatively unknown to everyone. There seems to be a bad thing for every good thing I found in the book. I wish she had delved into the villain a bit more but I am not going to split hairs. I will say that it is a great romance but just not a very believable one.
